Would you kill someone to prevent the one thing that our country has been seeking solutions for?
The press conference that took place on November 13, 2024, tackled about the extrajudicial killing that has been an issue in the country since the Duterte administration took over. The citizens did not agree on this since this raises serious issues against human rights.
During his administration, there were over 12,000 filipinos killed, some are innocent. A few examples of this was the killing of the 17-year-old teenager named, Kian Delos Reyes. He was believed to be a drug runner and was killed in an alley in Metro Manila. The families raised and fought over the case raising different prepositions around the media.
Human rights groups also stepped in stating that, these killings were wrong and asked for justice. According to different sources, this was the first drug on war killing that caused national outrage.
In accordance to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, in which the Philippines has signed, recognizes the right to life. They stated that the death penalty was abolished in the Philippines in 1987. The said country also signed the Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR, becoming a country or a part of a global movement against death penalty.
Under ICCPR, the right to be free from execution also covers extrajudicial killing. In which, the former president has violated the law.
However, some citizens agreed on the idea as this was the only solution, at that time, that has caused to lessen the drug users and were thought to be the only solution that could save the country from the vast number of drug users.
In conclusion, the former president violated and was against the law, in which these killings did not undergo rightful process and is inhumane in so many ways. This caused him to be arrested in the International Criminal Court Warrant. This just proves that no politician, no matter how powerful, is above the law.
